If you’re buying a UK-used iPad in Nigeria, check two things before anything else, whether it’s on Apple’s iPadOS 27 support list and whether Activation Lock has been removed. Apple released iPadOS 27 on 14 September 2026, and five iPad models that ran last year’s iPadOS 26 aren’t on the new list, which matters a lot when so many foreign-used tablets for sale are four or five years old.
The good news is that both checks take a few minutes and don’t need any special tools. You only need the iPad in your hand, switched on, and a seller who’s willing to let you go through setup before you pay. Start with the model, because iPadOS 27 has left five iPads behind
Open Settings > General > About and look at Model Name. If the seller’s listing says one thing and this screen says another, stop there. You can also tap Model Number until it shows a number starting with A, then match it against Apple’s official iPad model identification page, which is the most reliable way to tell similar-looking generations apart.
Once you know the exact model, compare it with Apple’s list of iPads compatible with iPadOS 27. The models that could run iPadOS 26 but don’t appear on the iPadOS 27 list are the ones to be most careful with, because they’re exactly the kind of older stock that tends to show up as “UK used” at an attractive price.

An iPad that stops at iPadOS 26 won’t suddenly stop working. It’ll keep running the apps you have, and older iPads have usually continued to receive some security fixes for a while after losing major updates. The problem is what happens over the next year or two, as banking apps, school portals and exam prep apps raise their minimum iPadOS version and your tablet gets left out. If you’re paying close to the price of a supported model, the supported one is the better buy.
Activation Lock is the check that can make an iPad worthless
Activation Lock ties an iPad to its owner’s Apple Account through Find My. If it’s still on, you won’t be able to set the tablet up as your own, and there’s nothing a phone repairer in Ikeja or Wuse can legitimately do about it without the original owner. Don’t accept “I’ll remove the iCloud later” or “it’s just a small lock”. A seller who genuinely owns the iPad can sign out of their Apple Account or remove it remotely in minutes. If they can’t do that on the spot, the safest assumption is that they aren’t the owner.
Battery and screen checks that separate a good UK-used iPad from a tired one
Older iPads don’t always show a battery health percentage the way iPhones do, so you’ll have to rely more on how the tablet behaves. Charge it for a few minutes and watch whether the percentage climbs steadily, then use it with brightness turned up and see if the level drops unusually fast. A tablet that gets hot just from browsing, or has a screen that’s lifting slightly at the edges, may have a swollen battery. Don’t buy an iPad with a bulging screen or a gap along the frame, because a swollen battery is a safety risk and not just a performance problem. For the screen, open a plain white page and then a plain dark one, and look for yellow patches, bright spots or lines. Drag an app icon slowly around the whole display to catch dead touch areas, which are common on tablets that have been dropped or had a cheap replacement screen fitted.

- Buyers who can test the iPad in person and complete setup before paying
- Anyone who wants Apple Intelligence and can stretch to an M1 iPad or the A17 Pro iPad mini
Skip it if
- Anyone being offered an iPad 8, iPad Air 3, iPad mini 5 or first-generation iPad Pro at close to the price of a newer model
- Buyers who can't see the iPad before paying, such as unverified online sellers asking for a transfer first
- Anyone whose seller won't sign out of their Apple Account in front of them
A UK-used iPad can be good value, but only if it's on Apple's iPadOS 27 list and passes the Activation Lock check before any money changes hands.
