Buying a Used PS5 in Nigeria Before GTA 6? What to Check Before You Pay

A used PS5 in Nigeria can save you money before GTA 6 lands on November 19, but the model number, disc drive, storage and account lock decide whether it's a good buy.

A used PS5 in Nigeria is about to get a lot more attention, because Grand Theft Auto VI launches on November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S only, and it won’t run on a PS4. If you’re one of the many players planning to move up from a PS4 in the next few weeks, a UK-used or locally used PS5 can cost noticeably less than a new one, but only if you know which model you’re actually paying for.

Three things decide whether a second-hand console is a good buy here, and they’re the model number, how much storage it really has, and whether the seller’s PlayStation account is still tied to it. You don’t need special tools for any of them. Ten minutes with the console switched on, connected to a TV and the internet, will tell you most of what you need.

Know which PS5 you’re looking at before you talk price

Sony has sold three broad PS5 designs. The original launch consoles belong to the CFI-1000 model group, the slimmer redesign is the CFI-2000 group, and the PS5 Pro is the CFI-7000 group. Each comes with different storage and different disc drive rules, so a seller’s “PS5, clean, ₦X” tells you very little until you’ve seen the model number.

You’ll find the model number on the label on the console itself, and you can confirm it on screen under Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. Make sure the serial number there matches the one on the box if the seller has it. A mismatch doesn’t always mean the console is stolen, but it does mean you’re not getting the package you’re being told about.

A digital PS5 changes the maths more than you’d think

Digital Edition consoles are usually the cheapest PS5s on the used market, and that’s tempting. Before you go that route, remember that Sony doesn’t run a Nigerian PlayStation Store region, so every digital game you buy goes through a foreign account topped up with gift cards. If you’ve relied on buying discs and selling them on afterwards, a digital console takes that option away.

GTA 6 softens the difference slightly, because Rockstar’s physical edition comes as a download code in a box rather than a disc, so you’ll be downloading it either way. For other games, though, it matters. Sony says its add-on disc drive works only with CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 model group consoles, and it needs an internet connection to pair the first time. That means an original CFI-1000 Digital Edition can never play discs, however much you’re willing to spend later.

Check the storage, because GTA 6 won’t be the only big download

Open Settings > Storage and look at how much space is free on the console’s internal SSD. The usable figure is always lower than the number on the box, because the system software takes a share. If you plan to keep GTA 6, an annual football game and a couple of shooters installed together, the original 825GB models fill up fast.

Every PS5 model supports extra storage through its M.2 slot, but Sony’s M.2 SSD requirements are specific. The drive has to be a PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD between 250GB and 8TB, Sony recommends 5,500MB/s or faster, and it needs a heatsink or heat transfer sheet. M.2 SATA drives won’t work. If a seller says the console comes with “extra storage installed”, ask to see it listed in the storage menu before you count it as part of the price.

Make sure the last owner’s account isn’t still attached

This is the check most buyers skip. When a PS5 owner turns on Console Sharing and Offline Play, anyone using that console can play the owner’s games, and it can only be active on one PS5 at a time. A console that arrives with someone else’s games appearing to work is not a bonus, because the owner can switch it off whenever they like.

According to Sony’s deactivation guide, an owner can disable it on the console under Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play, or remotely through their account by deactivating all devices, which Sony only allows once every six months. Ask the seller to sign out, delete their user profile and reset the console in front of you, then sign in with your own account and download one small free game to confirm everything works.

Before you pay for a used PS5

Test it like you’ll actually use it

Ask the seller to let you play a demanding game for at least 15 minutes, not just boot to the home screen. Listen for fan noise that rises sharply or a grinding sound, and feel how hot the air from the back gets. Try the HDMI cable with the TV you’ll be using if you can, since a damaged HDMI port is one of the more expensive repairs on any console. Move both sticks on the DualSense slowly in a menu, and if the cursor keeps drifting when you let go, factor in the cost of a new controller.

Power deserves a thought too. A PS5 is not a device you want switching off mid-update every time there’s an outage, so if your area sees a lot of power cuts, our guide to sizing a portable power station in Nigeria is worth reading alongside this one. If your home internet is going to carry the GTA 6 download, it helps to check whether an MTN 5G router makes sense for you before pre-load opens on November 12.

What a fair used PS5 deal looks like in Nigeria

Used PS5 prices in Nigeria move with the exchange rate and with each seller’s stock, so there’s no single reliable naira figure to quote, and you should expect demand to push them up as November gets closer. The safest approach is to decide which model you want first, then compare at least three sellers offering that exact model group. A slim disc console with a clean reset and a working controller is the easiest one to resell later, and a PS5 Pro only makes sense if you’ll actually notice the visual upgrade on a 4K TV.

Should you buy a used PS5 before GTA 6?

Buy it if

  • PS4 owners who want to play GTA 6 on launch day
  • Buyers who can inspect and test the console in person
  • Players happy to buy games through a foreign PlayStation account

Skip it if

  • Anyone being asked to pay without seeing the console reset
  • Buyers who rely on cheap used discs but are offered an original Digital Edition
  • Players with very limited data who can't handle large downloads

A used PS5 is a sensible way into GTA 6 if you confirm the model, storage and account status in person, and a CFI-2000 disc console is the safest all-round pick.
