In the Tecno Pova 8 vs Pova 8 Pro comparison, the Pro gets the faster Dimensity 7400 Ultimate chip and a 144Hz AMOLED screen, but the regular Pova 8 carries the bigger battery at 8,000mAh against the Pro’s 6,500mAh. For a lot of buyers in Nigeria, where a phone often has to get through a day of patchy power, that battery gap matters more than a few extra frames in a game.
Both phones run HiOS 16 on Android 16, both support 5G and both charge at 45W, so you aren’t choosing between old and new software or slow and fast charging. The real differences are in the chip, the screen, the cameras, durability and weight. Tecno doesn’t list naira prices for either model on its site, and we couldn’t confirm official Nigerian retail pricing, so we’ve left prices out of this comparison rather than quote figures that may not match what you’ll see in the shop.

Pick the Pova 8 Pro if gaming is why you’re buying a Pova at all
The Pro’s Dimensity 7400 Ultimate is a 4nm chip that runs up to 2.6GHz with a Mali-G615 MC2 GPU, while the Pova 8 uses the Dimensity 7100 at up to 2.4GHz with a Mali-G610 MC2. On top of that, Tecno pairs the Pro with a separate P1 graphics chip and says it can run PUBG Mobile at 144fps, backed by a 5,000mm² vapor chamber and an X-axis linear motor for in-game vibration. We haven’t tested either phone ourselves, so treat the frame-rate figure as Tecno’s claim rather than a guarantee, but the hardware gap between the two is real.
If you play for hours at a time, the extra cooling and the higher RAM floor on the Pro (8GB of physical RAM at minimum, against 6GB on the base Pova 8) will help it hold up better in long sessions. The Pova 8’s 8,000mAh battery is the reason to consider the cheaper model
The Pova 8 carries 1,500mAh more than the Pro, which works out to roughly 23% more capacity. Its screen is also lower resolution, which usually helps battery life, so if you mostly use WhatsApp, social apps, YouTube and mobile banking, it’s the one more likely to see you through a long day without a power bank. The trade-off is that both phones charge at 45W, so the bigger Pova 8 battery takes longer to fill from empty.
Tecno does make one battery promise for the Pro that the regular model doesn’t carry on its spec sheet. It says the Pro’s battery is rated for six years of battery health and uses a self-healing feature that restores “+1% battery health every 200 charges”. That’s a manufacturer claim we can’t verify yet, and whichever model you choose, it’s worth knowing how to check a phone’s real battery health if you’re buying one that isn’t sealed.
Screen, cameras and toughness all lean towards the Pro
The Pro’s 6.78-inch AMOLED panel is sharper at 2644 x 1208 and far brighter, with Tecno quoting 4,500 nits peak against 950 nits on the Pova 8. You’ll notice that outdoors in harsh sunlight more than anywhere else. The Pro also adds optical image stabilisation on its 50MP main camera and an 8MP ultra-wide, while the Pova 8 has a single 50MP autofocus camera, so the Pro is the easier choice if you shoot a lot of video or group photos.
Durability is another clear gap. Tecno lists the Pro with IP69K, IP69, IP68 and IP66 dust and water resistance and Corning Gorilla Glass 7i, while no IP rating appears on the Pova 8’s spec sheet. The Pro is also noticeably lighter and slimmer at 189g and 7.39mm, compared with 225g and 8.8mm for the Pova 8, and it moves up to Wi-Fi 6. Both are 5G phones, although whether that matters to you depends on coverage where you live, which we covered in whether a 5G phone is worth paying extra for.
Buy it if
- Pova 8: you want the longest battery life and mostly use social, streaming and banking apps
- Pova 8: you don't mind a heavier, thicker phone
- Pova 8 Pro: you play PUBG Mobile, CODM or other demanding games for long sessions
- Pova 8 Pro: you want a brighter AMOLED screen, OIS and proper water resistance
Skip it if
- Skip the Pova 8 if you need an ultra-wide camera or a confirmed IP rating
- Skip the Pova 8 Pro if all-day battery matters more to you than gaming performance
The Pova 8 Pro is the better-built phone and the one to buy for gaming, but the Pova 8 is the more sensible choice if battery life is your priority.
Check these before you pay for either Pova in Nigeria
