iPhone Duo sold out in minutes, so think twice before paying a deposit

The iPhone Duo sold out minutes after preorders opened on October 16, pushing US deliveries to late January and leaving early Nigerian stock scarce and pricey.

The iPhone Duo sold out within minutes of preorders opening on Friday, October 16, 2026, and Apple’s US online store was soon quoting late-January delivery for every colour and every storage size, from the $1,999 256GB model to the 2TB version. Preorders went live at 1pm Nigerian time, a week before the phone’s official October 23 launch, and reports suggest Apple’s own retail stores also ran through their launch-day allocation almost immediately.

Nigeria isn’t on the list of countries Apple named for the first wave, so nobody here was going to walk into an Apple Store on launch day anyway. What the sellout changes is the supply line most Nigerian buyers depend on. The units that normally reach Lagos and Abuja in the first weeks come from buyers in the UAE, the UK and the US, and if American customers are waiting until 2027, the spare stock that usually flows out of Dubai is going to be thin too.

January deliveries in the US mean scarce, expensive units in Lagos

When a phone is this hard to get at the source, the first local sellers to land stock can name their price, and early buyers absorb the gap. Apple hasn’t said how many iPhone Duos it had ready for launch or why the wait stretched so far, while Counterpoint Research expects about 6 million units to sell this year, which is small next to a regular iPhone. Limited supply plus strong demand is the classic recipe for launch-week naira prices that sit well above what the phone settles at a few months later.

Apple’s US price list runs from $1,999 for 256GB, with reports putting the 2TB model at $3,199. Those are before shipping, import duty, VAT and a seller’s margin, so any naira figure you see this month is an estimate rather than a market price. We haven’t seen a reliable Nigerian price yet, which is why there’s no price range on this page.

A pre-order deposit to a local seller carries more risk than usual

Expect to see Instagram and WhatsApp vendors offering “guaranteed” iPhone Duo slots if you pay part of the price upfront. Some will be genuine importers with a contact in Dubai. Others may not have a confirmed source at all, and with American customers themselves waiting until January, a promise of delivery in two weeks deserves hard questions before any money moves.

Before you pay for an iPhone Duo pre-order

The carrier-lock check is the one people skip in the excitement, and on this phone it’s expensive to get wrong. Open Settings > General > About and look at Carrier Lock before you hand over the balance. Our earlier guide to buying the iPhone Duo in Nigeria covers eSIM setup and the full list of checks, and how Apple’s warranty treats iPhones bought abroad matters more on a foldable, where the inner screen and hinge are the parts most likely to need work.

Waiting until early 2027 is the cheaper bet for most buyers

Apple’s second wave adds 28 more countries on October 30, and supply usually loosens once launch orders are filled, so the shortage won’t last forever. If you’re set on a foldable this year and have someone buying directly from Apple in the UAE or the UK, go ahead, but be ready for that order to slip too. If you’re relying on a local seller, holding off until the January backlog clears gives you more stock to choose from, clearer naira prices and a few months of owner reports on how the hinge and crease are holding up.

If the foldable form isn’t the main draw, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is easier to find and has the stronger camera system, as our Galaxy S26 Ultra vs iPhone 18 Pro Max comparison lays out. For anyone who does want the Duo, the money you’d lose to a launch-week markup is better kept for a proper case and a repair budget once real stock arrives.
